2013 MALARIA CAMPAIGN

Malaria, a mosquito – borne, climate sensitive disease is caused by the parasite Plasmodium. It affects over 300 million people and is   responsible for over one million deaths worldwide each year, most of whom are children in Sub Saharan Africa.

With these statistics in mind, Total Nigeria Plc on April 25, 2013 joined the global community in marking the World Malaria Day as declared by the World Health Organization (WHO) in Geneva Switzerland. The World Malaria Day celebration is an initiative aimed at reducing and possibly eradicating Malaria with the theme for this year being "......ACT Against Malaria, Let's Protect Ourselves..!!!".

In accordance with the Group's directive and in line with its continued commitment to being socially responsible to its communities, Total Nigeria Plc on April 25, 2013 launched its annual Malaria campaign at Lagos Blending Plant, Kirikiri. Amongst those in attendance were the Lagos State Ministry of Health, the Managing Director, Lagos State Waste Management Authority, the Chairman Oriade Local Government Area, the Bale of Kirikiri Town and his entourage, delegates of Petroleum Tanker Drivers Union, Kirikiri Market women, Students, and Pregnant women from Tincan Hospital, Kirikiri.

The goal was to create a lot of awareness on the prevention and control of this deadly disease to its target audience who are children, employees, customers, and other key stakeholders. Heralding activities for this event were the distribution of free mosquito nets, flyers, branded t-shirts, educational packs on the subject and malaria health talks by our medical partners, MEDEXIA Nigeria Limited, to students of Dr. Lucas memorial junior and senior secondary schools, Kirikiri.
